Title: Slaves and Masters
Written by: Jared Vaughn
Logline:
A college student uninterested in his Black History class has a harrowing dream where he experiences the brutal reality of slavery, only to wake up with a newfound perspective.
Synopsis:
Slaves and Masters opens in a Black History class at a university in Ohio, where a diverse group of students watches a scene from the film "ROOTS" depicting Kunta Kinte's brutal whipping. George, a disinterested white student, is jolted awake by his classmate Gloria, who chastises him for not paying attention.
Bored and dismissive, George falls asleep again and slips into a vivid nightmare. He awakens in a harsh, sun-drenched field, shackled and disoriented. George finds himself a white slave in an alternate reality where Black people are the slave owners, and white people are enslaved. Pursued by Black overseers, he experiences the terror and brutality of slavery firsthand.
As George struggles to understand his new reality, he meets other white slaves who accept their fate. Discovering a newspaper dated March 1863, George learns about an Emancipation Proclamation signed by a Black president, declaring all slaves free. However, his attempt to escape and share this revelation results in him being captured and subjected to a public whipping as a warning to others.
George's desperate cries merge with the voice of Gloria, who wakes him from his nightmare. Back in the classroom, George is visibly shaken and disoriented. Realizing he is back in 2023, he is struck by the profound impact of his dream. As he leaves the class with Gloria, he reflects on the intense and transformative experience, understanding the importance of the history he had previously ignored.
Slaves and Masters is a powerful exploration of historical trauma and empathy, highlighting the significance of understanding and respecting the past to inform the present.
