Maria is a people watcher, especially on the underground. She invents names and situations for everyone she encounters. That means she pays close attention to other passengers, but not everyone does. That's how she spots the evil being on the opposite escalator; whatever it is, the eyes pierce her, and she is magnetised. When she does break away, she runs for her life, dodging people on the stairs who are standing on the wrong side. At the bottom, she runs headlong into Hilary, an older lady who notices the terror in her eyes. Hilary stays with her while she gets her train, and she is grateful. But as the train pulls away from the platform, a flash of light pierces the tunnel, and there is a noise as the bomb left by the evil being explodes.
