On the night his romantic partner tragically dies after childbirth, a man finds his next great love in her newborn daughter, embarking on an 18-year journey to realize and continue his internal feelings for his partner, while knowingly choosing to raise her daughter on his own.
When he reveals these true feelings more than 18 years later, what it really reveals is that he was subversively acting on these feelings all along in plain sight, and his steady, subjective actions suddenly are seen for what they were all along – and the direction of their relationship takes an unforeseen turn (but NOT unforeseen to Chaz, or so he thinks) as Maddy graduates High School. True love comes from many angles, even angles not readily noticeable upon first viewing.
This film covers a period of 18 years of watching Maddy growing up thru becoming a high school graduate, and what happens as Chaz tries to become a great “father” on his own while he waits until Maddy is old enough to understand that the great love her “father” has for Maddy’s mother is still alive, and he needs to act on that love after spending 18 years being a “father” to Maddy – well, a father in the acting sense, but not in the literal sense. They are not related by blood, by DNA, by marriage to Marilet – by no legal means whatsoever. They are just 2 people related ONLY by their circumstances, of the unexpected death of Marilet.
On the first night home from the hospital, Chaz promises Maddy he will carry over the love he has for Marilet until Maddy is old enough to comprehend, setting up a pattern of seeing “Maddy & Daddy” interactions that on the surface look like normal, endearing life-living scenarios, but upon reflection of Chaz’s reveal at the end, really show the subtle undertones of Chaz’s word and actions of just how Chaz views Maddy all along – one day as a replacement for Marilet. The fine line between appearance and intent is somehow blurred upon initial viewing, only becoming clearer when re-visited, after Chaz secretly confesses his real feelings about Maddy 18 years into their relationship. Chaz consistently tells everyone and anyone how “Maddy IS Marilet”, but in such a way that seems admirable in normal life happenings, presenting it as a way to honor Marilet’s memory to others, but knowingly reinforcing how he really feels and what he thinks he knows will be his eventual reality one day.
Chaz believes he has everything in place (including a big settlement package from the hospital right after Marilet died, that remained untouched and interest-bearing until Maddy turned 18 right before graduating HS) for this next phase of their relationship together, but Maddy tries to surprise Chaz with a secret genealogy search for both of them, only to discover that Chaz really isn’t her biological father. The timing of this revelation for Maddy – early spring in her senior year of high school – means that she has to reach out to someone she can trust, and she finds the right person for that.
In the end, Marilet’s sister, Maddy’s Aunt Chrisitna, helps Maddy make it thru the last few months of High School, and though Chaz believes he has everything in place to join Maddy in the next faze of their lives together, Graduation Day from high school for Maddy lays out Chaz’s perfect plans he thinks he has all set in place. Once Maddy gets all this info about Chaz’s plans, she joins forces with Christina to make sure those plans get buried without a trace – which includes Chaz himself, as well. And while we never really know the exact circumstances of Chaz’s tragic accident, we know Christina made sure Maddy will be able to live the rest of her life without the shadow of Chaz’s vision of her replacing her mother in any way for Chaz’s sick desires. Maddy has the settlement money, and a new lease on life as she goes off to college.
