Synopsis

FLIGHT OF THE SCAPEGOAT

ACT 1

Set in 1960s rural Texas, “FLIGHT OF THE SCAPEGOAT” tells the story of Hayden Little, a WWII veteran and POW who worked as a crop-dusting pilot but lost his license after being unjustly accused of flying drunk. Living as a recluse on his deceased parents’ farm with his only friend—an old bloodhound named Lyndon—Hayden unexpectedly meets two local boys on their way to go fishing at a nearby lake. The brothers, Noah and Abe Daniels, are enthralled with his crop duster, which has been left to deteriorate in a field. When they tell their mother, Sarah, about their adventure, she tells them to stay away from Hayden because he is a “drunk.” We learn that Sarah’s husband and the boys’ father was recently killed by a drunk driver, and Sarah is very bitter about the loss and resents anyone with a reputation for abusing alcohol. However, after a sermon on the Levitical scapegoat, Pastor Greg, along with an apparent sign from God, convinces Sarah to allow Hayden to show the boys his plane.

ACT 2

After Sarah lets Hayden show the boys his plane, Pastor Greg learns that the local farmers’ crops are threatened by boll weevils, and there aren't enough crop dusters to spray them all. Pastor Greg asks Hayden to help, and Hayden agrees to appeal to the FAA for his license if he can clear his name. With Lyndon and the local sheriff's help, he finds evidence to exonerate himself and gets his license back. After a day of repairing his plane, Noah and Abe unexpectedly invite him in for dinner, surprising Sarah, who briefly sees Hayden differently. However, after Hayden relives his POW trauma and drinks to forget about it, Sarah distances her family again. Hayden nearly crashes during a crop-dusting job, triggering more flashbacks, and later drinks himself unconscious. The next morning, he finds Lyndon dead on his porch and tells Pastor Greg he’s done flying. Pastor Greg advises Hayden to pray for God to take away his nightmares. Meanwhile, Sarah learns about Hayden’s drinking, and Pastor Greg urges her to forgive both him and the drunk driver who killed her husband.

ACT 3

Both Hayden and Sarah follow Pastor Greg’s advice on prayer and forgiveness. Hayden’s nightmares stop, and Sarah lets go of her anger. Hayden resumes flying to save the farmers’ crops but nearly crashes after hitting a flock of birds. Sarah and her boys witness his near crash and rush him to the hospital. There, Pastor Greg is surprised to learn Hayden is flying again and asks him to share his story with the congregation, which Hayden reluctantly does. After the service, they celebrate Noah and Abe's decision to be saved. Sarah shares her own story of salvation with Hayden. Pastor Greg gives Hayden a Bible, which he reads. Later, Hayden finds salvation while flying among the clouds. Hayden, Noah, and Abe are baptized together at the lake.
