Thanks to what's dubbed as the "Renown Gene", for the last eighty years heroes and villians have become a natural part of life. The origins of the Renown Gene are not known to the majority of the public, instead most believe that some people are just born with it and some are not, while in reality it is the result of higher beings mating with humans thousands of years ago as this verse from the Bible explains.
Genesis 6:4 "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown."
(Hence the series title: Those of Renown)

While still hesitant to try out, Sam, Battalion's manager happens to see Lance saving a couple from certain death with his teleportation powers, in which Sam urges Lance to try out to become a part of Battalion's team, mentioning to Lance that he is actually Battalion's manager. Due to the fact that Lance can't fully control his powers Sam tells Lance that if he decides to try out he will help him train to better control them. Lance agrees the next day and his training begins. The story then begins to focus on not just Lance but the other four individuals who seek to become a part of Battalion's team.
