Javier Núñez is a dynamic Colombian-Canadian filmmaker based in San Diego, California. With over 15 years in the industry, he has crafted an extensive and diverse portfolio that highlights his talent for compelling narratives and impactful documentaries, often exploring pressing social issues to foster understanding and drive change. He holds an MFA in Film and Television Production and a BFA in Journalism and Mass Communications, complemented by advanced studies in documentary production, digital film, and creative directing. A versatile director and producer, Javier has directed over 20 short films, including more than 15 narrative shorts that have been featured in over 75 international film festivals. His work has earned numerous awards for best director, best international short film, best horror short film, and best cinematography, showcasing his adeptness in multicultural storytelling. His notable works include "Garzal: Fe y Resistencia," a documentary on the resilience of the communities of El Garzal and La Nueva Esperanza. As audiovisual producer for the UNDP (2010-11), he directed over ten short documentaries about UNDP programs in Colombia. His co-produced documentary "Nosotras," addressing domestic violence in rural Colombia, premiered at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto in 2023. Additionally, his medium-length documentary "Diabetes voices" in Colombia, was aired on public TV in 2017. Currently, Javier has two feature films in post-production: the narrative feature "Undisclosed," slated for release in 2025, and the documentary "El Silencio de las Garzas," expected to be completed by the end of 2024. He is also developing two other feature-length narratives, with "Inside" optioned for production by a Vancouver company and "Mexicanoids," a sci-fi dystopian thriller drama about immigration in the US. An advocate for social justice, Javier aims to illuminate issues of inequality, gender dynamics, and the complex interplay of financial status, ethnicity, and citizenship through his films. Fluent in English and Spanish, he reaches diverse audiences with his innovative and thought-provoking storytelling, believing that it can create a better world by fostering empathy and understanding across cultures and communities.
